We are always looking for enthusiastic, dedicated students to join our group!
Our typical recruitment is during the fall semester to then start/train in lab for winter semester and continue for the following summer (part-time paid position) + academic year (fall/spring semesters); this 15-month initial commitment enables students to gain skills and make progress in their experiments. Students can (and often do) continue beyond this timeframe, with many participating through graduation. For current UWEC students, I recommend students complete the biology core curriculum (BIOL221/222/223; can be enrolling in BIOL222/223 spring term) in preparation for our lab. Students typically start as sophomores or juniors in our lab and spend 8-10 hours per week during the semester on experiments. During the academic year, most students work in lab for credit (~2 credits/semester) or federal work study (FWS).
There are a number of ways to support your participation in research. Many of our members enter as Biology Research Scholars (aka biology department scaffold program); this program recruits mid-fall semester for the following spring/summer/fall. Additional support for lab members has come through a variety of mechanisms; please check out the links below for more information:
UWEC Blugold Fellows (incoming students)
UWEC-Mayo Clinic Biomedical Innovator Program (incoming students)
UWEC McNair Scholars Program (current students, students from underrepresented backgrounds)
UWEC Office of Sponsored Research and Programs
If you are interested in joining our lab, please email Dr. Carter ([email protected]) to talk about opportunities.
